For my girls...
Dear girls,
I’m doing the best I can with what I know, and I’m still learning.
Being your dad has asked me to look at the patterns I carry, the ways I listen, and the choices I make. When a pattern no longer helps me care for you, I can choose to change it.
These lessons are here for you to return to as you grow. You get to choose the people you welcome into your life and how you show up for them. You can listen, question, learn, and change your mind.
I hope these words offer a little direction and remind you that your father was learning, too.

I’m Derek, a father of three girls, a disabled Navy veteran, and a former firefighter-paramedic. My background also includes working as an EMT-B in Virginia Beach and as an emergency department technician at Norfolk General Hospital.
